A holiday home for a week near Dieppe, on the same coast

Driving to Dieppe and back every day would make no sense, and that is not what we suggest. A week on the east side works the other way round: the town once, the places in between several times. From the house, the road to Dieppe passes Saint-Valery-en-Caux at 20 minutes, Veules-les-Roses and Sotteville-sur-Mer at 30, Quiberville at 40 and Varengeville at 45 or 50. Each village becomes an outing in its own right, never more than an hour away.

If your plan is to spend every evening at the harbour in Dieppe, a rental in town will suit you better. If you are after a large, quiet house with enclosed grounds to come back to, and you like the idea of seeing the eastern coast piece by piece, you will barely notice the distance.

Choose Saturday, for the big market along the Grande Rue and in the town centre, which TF1 viewers voted France's most beautiful in 2020. A week usually holds only one Saturday: that morning, you give up the Fécamp market, which takes place at the same time. Leave early, as everything happens before lunch.

Around midday, head down to Quai Henri IV, lined with fish and seafood restaurants, by way of the church of Saint-Jacques. The afternoon divides according to the group. Museum lovers climb to the Château-Musée, which looks down on the town and seafront and holds a collection of carved ivories. Families make for ESTRAN, the Cité de la Mer, and its aquarium. Both groups meet up afterwards on the broad lawns along the pebble beach.

Drive straight back without stopping: the day has been long, and the villages on the road each have their own day in the week. The day after, stay at the house.

A week near Dieppe inevitably includes several drives of 40 minutes or more. To balance them, keep two days when nobody drives, one after Dieppe, one after Varengeville. No practical public transport reaches the village: on those days, you genuinely stay on the property.

There is plenty to do. A hectare of enclosed grounds where children play well away from traffic, a play frame, loungers on the terrace, and the fire pit with its plancha for the evening. The adults read, the teenagers sleep, and someone cooks the fish brought back from the quay the day before.

If you really want to get out, Veulettes-sur-Mer is 10 minutes away, and so is Lac de Caniel. For the lake, keep one habit: bathing was prohibited on several occasions during summer 2026, so ask the ARS health authority or the leisure centre itself on the morning you go.

The eastern coast keeps some events for those who come outside summer. In even-numbered years, Dieppe hosts its International Kite Festival in September. In November, the herring and scallop fair takes place there, shortly after the scallop season opens in the eastern Channel at the beginning of October. Dates change every year: the tourist office publishes them.

For travellers from the UK, Dieppe has another draw. The DFDS ferry links Newhaven to Dieppe, and the house is 55 minutes from the port, so there is no need to cross half of France: you drive off the boat on the right stretch of coast. Timetables vary with the season, so compare the ship's arrival time with check-in at the house, from 4 pm, and plan a stop in Pourville or Varengeville if you land early.
