A holiday rental in Seine-Maritime

Seine-Maritime is a coastline of cliffs running from Le Havre to Le Tréport, a farming plateau behind it, and the Seine valley leading to Rouen. Butot-Vénesville lies in the Durdent valley, roughly the same distance from Le Havre and Dieppe: an hour one way, 55 minutes the other. That position changes the way you travel. Instead of moving between three hotels, you keep the same house all week, the luggage stays in the bedrooms and you head out in the morning with just a day bag. In high season the house is let by the week anyway, with a 7-night minimum, which fits this rhythm well.

The private car park on the property takes 4 cars. With several families, the group can split up for the day: some to Rouen for the cathedral, others to the beach 10 minutes away, and everyone meets up again round the table in the evening.

Over 7 nights, three big outings are enough: any more and the car starts to take over the holiday. The D-Day beaches are not in Seine-Maritime: they are in Calvados and the Manche. From the house, Ouistreham is 1 hr 50 away and Bayeux 2 hr 05. It can be done in a day, but it means more than 4 hours of driving there and back. If the landing beaches are the heart of your trip, it makes sense to stay further west for part of it. If they are one outing among others, leave early and plan a quiet day afterwards.

Honfleur (1 hr) and Deauville (1 hr 15) are in Calvados too. They are within reach, but they tell a different story from the chalk cliffs and the Caux plateau, which our page on the Pays de Caux describes.

If you are coming from the UK, two ferry routes land in the département: Newhaven to Dieppe (DFDS), 55 minutes from the house, and Portsmouth to Le Havre (Brittany Ferries), an hour away. Sailing times vary with the season. From Belgium, allow 4 hr 30 by road from Brussels.

In high season, the house is let by the week, and those weeks go first. The rest of the year, 2 nights are enough: a long weekend already leaves time for Rouen or Étretat as well as the beach.
