A holiday home in Normandy in August: booking it and making the most of it

August is high season, and the house is let for 7 nights minimum. Idylliq sets out the exact periods and the arrival day that applies: we do not give it here, because it can vary. Summer weeks are the first to be requested by groups and families who have to line up several people's annual leave. The sensible move is to secure August as soon as everyone's holiday is booked.

If you are looking late, do not give up straight away. This French public holiday falls in the middle of the month, and it is better to know whether it lands in your week before you plan shopping and outings.

August has its fixtures, and some stop dead at the end of the month. Festival dates change every year, and the tourist office events listing has them. Here are the ones that set the pace of the month around the house.

Veulettes-sur-Mer is the beach for the week: 10 minutes by road, free parking on the seafront and lifeguards every afternoon of the month. With the house so close, there is no need to spend the whole day on the pebbles. You can arrive when the lifeguards start at 11 am, go home for lunch in the shade of the grounds, then come back late in the afternoon for a last swim before 7 pm.

For a change of scene, Petites Dalles is the same distance away, smaller and more tucked in. One warning holds all summer: at Lac de Caniel, swimming was banned several times in 2026 because of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). Check with the ARS health authority or the leisure park on the day, and treat the sea as your swimming option.

The coast's big sights can still be visited in August if you shift the clock. The general rule: head early for whatever draws people, and keep the afternoon for what is close to the house. In August the evenings are long and you eat outside. The terrace facing the grounds, with its outdoor table, the fire pit and the Weber, turns every evening into a summer dinner for 11. One rule to bear in mind: outside, noise stops at 10 pm, when it has barely got dark. Conversations carry on in the sitting room with the windows open. Parties are not allowed, in this season as in any other.
