A Christmas holiday home in Normandy, through to New Year

The kitchen has what you need for a festive meal without improvising: oven, microwave, induction hob, dishwasher, crockery and utensils for 12, and a freezer for the ice-cream Yule log. Check-in is from 4 pm, and in December it gets dark early. Plan a simple first supper and keep the big shop for the next morning. Cany-Barville, 10 minutes away, has shops, and its Monday morning market is one of the largest in the département: if the holiday calendar allows, that is where the Christmas basket gets filled. Scallops, in season in the eastern Channel since early October, have every right to a place on the table.

One point, to avoid any misunderstanding. Christmas Eve or Christmas Day dinner among the people staying in the house is a family meal, and very welcome. Evenings with outside guests are not allowed, at Christmas or on New Year's Eve, and noise outdoors stops at 10 pm. The countdown to midnight therefore happens indoors, around the stove.

The heating works in every room, bedrooms and bathrooms included, so no one has to decide who gets the warm room. The wood stove gathers seven or eight people in the sitting room, and the Smart TV suits Christmas films, with fibre Wi-Fi for streaming. The blackout curtains upstairs protect the lie-ins on the 25th. For the very young, two travel cots and a high chair are provided; just bring the cot bedding. And when each branch of the family arrives with a car full of presents, the private parking takes 4 cars behind the gate.

Rouen is an hour's drive away. Its Christmas market runs from late November to late December in the historic centre, around the cathedral that Monet painted as a series; the exact dates change each year, so check them before you go. Closer by, the morning markets set the rhythm of the week: Saint-Valery-en-Caux on Friday (20 minutes), Fécamp on place Bellet or Doudeville on Saturday (25 minutes). In winter and on public holidays they are not guaranteed to run, so ask the town hall or the tourist office. In Fécamp, the Palais Bénédictine, with its liqueur and its museum, makes for a dry afternoon if the weather turns, provided you check its winter opening times.

Winter brings some of the biggest tides of the year. At low tide, the foreshore opens up far out below the cliffs, with its rocks and sand; at high tide, the sea comes right back up to the pebbles. Year-end dates are few and sought after by families who want to get together: book as soon as the date of the gathering is set.
