February half-term in the UK, or the mid-term break in Ireland, does not line up neatly with French school holidays. France staggers its winter break across three zones: Normandy is in zone B and Paris in zone C, so the coast is busier some weeks than others depending on which French families are off. None of this stops you booking, but it is worth knowing that a week that overlaps with the Paris holidays will feel less empty in the villages and at the Saturday markets. If you are travelling with another family whose school dates differ from yours, set the two calendars side by side and look for the weekend where they overlap. Failing that, one half of the group can come for the week and the other join for the last two nights.

Some February days the wind and rain win. The house is ready for that: toys and games are provided, and indoor dens let the youngest build a hideaway in the middle of the sitting room. Older children take over the long table for a jigsaw or a board game brought from home, and the adults keep the sofa and the stove. Just keep little ones well away from the fire.

In the evening, muddy wellies and soaked trousers go through the washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility room, and everything is dry for the next day's outing. Pack for rain as much as for cold: wellies for every child, windproof jackets, hats, spare gloves and a dry pair of shoes each. For babies and toddlers, bring the bedding for the travel cots, the only linen not provided. Sheets and towels for everyone else are already at the house.
