The arrival and departure times shape the weekend. Friday comes down to an evening, Sunday to breakfast and a little tidying, and everything happens on Saturday. Better to know that before promising everyone Étretat, Dieppe and a market in the same trip.

Arriving at 4 pm rather than after dark makes a real difference: time to share out the bedrooms, light the fire pit or the stove depending on the season, and walk round the grounds before dinner. On Sunday morning, as cleaning is included, you only need to run the dishwasher, empty the fridge and leave by 10 am. If that morning feels too short, the answer is a third night. It turns Sunday into a second full day, and it is often what separates a restful weekend from a rushed one. Outside high season, it books just like the other two.

The house sits in the middle of the Alabaster Coast, which is exactly why you have to choose. Fécamp and Étretat lie to the west; Saint-Valery-en-Caux, Veules-les-Roses and Dieppe to the east. And since the big markets in Fécamp and Dieppe are both held on Saturday morning, the decision is usually made on Friday evening.

The west is the shorter option. Fécamp is 25 minutes away, with its harbour and Cap Fagnet, then come Yport and Étretat, where it pays to arrive early because the car parks fill up at weekends. The east means more driving, and we would rather say so: Dieppe is 55 minutes away, not on the doorstep. In return, the road strings together Saint-Valery, Veules, Quiberville and Varengeville, and on Saturday morning there is the Dieppe market, voted the most beautiful in France in 2020 by viewers of the French TV channel TF1. With eleven people, a short stay is won or lost on logistics. Friday arrivals are often staggered: the 4 parking spaces behind the electric gate save anyone circling the village. Send a single car for the first evening's shopping, as the shops in Cany-Barville are 10 minutes away, rather than filling every boot before you leave.

Saturday evening is when everyone sits down together. The dining table seats 10 and the bar extends it for the eleventh guest, with crockery for 12. A birthday dinner among the people staying in the house is welcome. A party with outside guests is not: parties are not allowed and noise outdoors stops at 10 pm.
