A weekend in Normandy from Paris: a journey without surprises

From Porte Maillot, the calculated route comes to 193 km and 2 hours 20 minutes without traffic. We prefer to state it as it is: you will sometimes read shorter times for reaching the coast from Paris, but they do not apply to Butot-Vénesville, and a badly estimated journey spoils an arrival. From the east or south of Paris, add the time it takes to cross the Île-de-France region.

The route is simple. Take the A13, the Normandy motorway, towards Rouen, then branch off towards Yvetot and the coast, before finishing on the small roads of the Pays de Caux down into the Durdent valley. Follow your satnav for the exits. One detail matters on arrival: some satnavs lead to a lane behind the house. Enter "Demeure Normande Bleue" as your destination instead, and you will arrive at the gate.

Once through the electric gate, 4 cars park inside the property, enough for a group of 11 arriving in three or four vehicles. If you drive an electric car, a domestic socket lets you charge for a flat €20 per charge. It is not a rapid charger: arrive with enough battery for your Saturday trips.

Check-in is from 4 pm. To make the most of it without stress, the maths is quick: leave west Paris around 1.30 or 2 pm and you are at the house in the late afternoon, just after check-in opens. Leaving in the early afternoon mainly gets you ahead of the Friday evening exodus, when the roads out of Paris fill up, especially before French bank holiday weekends and school holidays.

If you can only leave after work, it is often better to wait until late evening than to join the 6 pm jams. In that case, let the Idylliq concierge service know when you expect to arrive. For shopping, there is no need to fill the boot in Paris: the shops in Cany-Barville are 10 minutes from the house, and the kitchen basics, oil, salt, pepper and spices, are already there. Sheets and towels are provided, apart from the cot bedding.

Trains on the Paris-Le Havre line link Paris Saint-Lazare to Yvetot in about 1 hour 40, with direct services roughly every hour during the day. Timetables change with the day and the season, so check them when you book your tickets.

That leaves the last leg. Yvetot station is 35 minutes from the house, and no practical public transport serves the village. You therefore need a car there: a hire car booked in advance, or a taxi. The train makes sense when nobody wants to drive after a week at work, or to avoid the busy Friday departures. In total, between 1 hour 40 on the train and 35 minutes by road, the journey is close to the drive, plus waiting time at the station. With young children, the train has another advantage: the bulky kit does not need to travel, as the travel cots and the high chair are already waiting at the house.

From Britain, the house is well placed for the Channel crossings. Two ferry routes land within an hour's drive, and the Channel Tunnel works too if you prefer a short crossing and a longer drive. The ferry port at Ouistreham, further west, is 1 hour 50 away. Timetables and frequencies vary with the season, so check them with the operators when you book. Wherever you land, the last stretch is by car, and check-in at the house is from 4 pm.

Check-out is by 10 am. You have two strategies. The first: hit the road straight away and be back in Paris in the early afternoon, ahead of the end-of-weekend traffic. The second: load the car, spend the day on the coast and leave late in the evening, once most of the traffic has cleared. In summer, the Sunday morning market in Saint-Valery-en-Caux, 20 to 25 minutes away, fills the morning nicely. What to avoid is setting off at around 5 pm with everyone else.

There is a third option, often the best: book the Sunday night. You leave the house on Monday before 10 am, stop at Cany-Barville market 10 minutes away, then drive home on quieter roads than on a Sunday evening. Outside high season, the house is let from 2 nights, and a third night is booked like any other. In high season, it is let for 7 nights minimum, and Idylliq specifies the periods concerned.
